Unlocking Your Spiritual Authority: How Believers Can Command Life’s Storms

Many Christians possess great authority, yet they either do not recognize it or fail to make use of it. This is one of the most overlooked truths in the life of a believer. Authority is not something we earn; it is something given to us by God the moment we are born again. To live effectively, we must understand the spiritual authority of believers in Christ—recognizing the power and rights we already have so we can act boldly, pray confidently, and walk in victory rather than waiting passively for God to intervene.

To illustrate this, let me share a personal story.

I grew up in a very humble background where we relied on God for almost everything. Our home was simple. My father, a man of faith, had a small mud house. Despite its humble construction, that house has stood the test of time and is still standing to this day.

Every year, during a particular season, violent storms would sweep through our area. These were not ordinary storms—they were strong enough to tear roofs off solid buildings, lift debris into the air, and leave communities in chaos. Concrete homes, reinforced with heavy wires and steel, often could not withstand the winds. Many people woke up in the middle of the night to find their homes partially or completely destroyed.

Our house, however, was different. It was a simple mud house, far less sturdy than the concrete buildings around it. Logically, it should have been the first to suffer damage. Yet, something remarkable always happened: our house remained untouched.

I remember vividly how my father handled these storms. Whenever he sensed the storm growing stronger, he would step outside, stand before the approaching winds, and pray. He would speak boldly, binding the storm and declaring that it would not harm our home. Each time, God answered his prayers. The storm would rage, roofs of neighboring buildings would be lifted and carried away, yet our “weak” house stood firm.

One particular night remains etched in my memory. A powerful storm tore the roof off a nearby building and carried it a considerable distance. We watched everything unfold right before our eyes. Yet, our humble mud house remained untouched, completely unharmed. That experience was not just remarkable; it was a powerful lesson in authority and faith—reminding me of the power over life and death that God grants to those who walk in His Spirit and exercise the authority He has given them.

The Lesson of Spiritual Authority

This experience taught me a truth that has shaped my life ever since: there is tremendous power in the prayers of a believer who dares to believe what they pray. Physical strength, material wealth, or human effort is no match for spiritual authority when exercised in faith.

When Jesus spoke to the storm and it ceased, He was not merely performing a miracle for His disciples’ benefit. He was demonstrating a principle for all believers: we possess authority over circumstances, over natural forces, and over spiritual opposition.

Mark 4:39-41 recounts the moment Jesus rebuked the storm:

"He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’"

This authority is available to every believer. When Jesus calmed the storm, He illustrated the power and responsibility that comes with being a child of God. The storm obeyed Him because He spoke from a position of authority. Likewise, we can speak to the “storms” in our lives—financial struggles, health crises, relational problems, and spiritual attacks—and see them obey the authority given to us by God. Truly, if God be for you, who can be against you? With Him on your side, no challenge or enemy can ultimately prevail against the authority He has placed in your hands.

Life Applications

Understanding this principle is only the first step. Walking in your authority requires deliberate action and intentional faith. Here are practical lessons we can take from this story:

1. Recognize Your Authority
Many believers live under the illusion that they are powerless. Authority does not require ceremony, ordination, or special status—it is granted by God to all who are born again. You have authority over every situation that attempts to disrupt God’s plan for your life. Start by recognizing that this authority exists. Believe that you can influence circumstances through prayer and faith.

2. Speak with Boldness
Faith without expression is dormant. Just as my father stood before the storm and declared its limitation, we must speak boldly over our circumstances. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Words are a creative tool. Speak to your financial struggles, health challenges, or conflicts with confidence, knowing that God has placed authority in your hands.

3. Act in Faith
Faith is not passive. My father did not merely wait for the storm to pass; he actively engaged it with prayer and declarations. Likewise, when you face challenges, take action consistent with your faith. Pray, declare God’s promises, and act wisely within the natural realm. Faith works hand in hand with action.

4. Trust God’s Response
One reason many Christians hesitate to use their authority is fear that nothing will change. Trust that God always responds to faith-filled action. Just as God consistently answered my father’s prayers, He will back up your declarations when they are made in alignment with His Word.

5. Maintain Consistency
Authority is not exercised once and forgotten. Storms come repeatedly, challenges recur, and spiritual battles continue. Regular prayer, consistent declarations, and daily alignment with God’s Word ensure that your authority remains active and effective.

6. Teach Others by Example
Your exercise of authority can inspire and strengthen others. Just as I witnessed my father’s boldness and learned a life-changing lesson, your consistent demonstration of faith and authority can impact your family, church, and community. Leadership through example multiplies influence.

7. Do Not Depend Solely on Physical Resources
Concrete houses, steel reinforcements, and material strength failed around us. The mud house endured because it was under divine protection. Similarly, do not rely solely on resources, intelligence, or connections. True security and victory come from recognizing and exercising spiritual authority.

The Takeaway

The storms of life will come. Challenges will rise, crises will appear, and opposition will knock on your door. But as a believer, you have been equipped with spiritual authority to face them. The question is: will you recognize it? Will you use it boldly, consistently, and faithfully?

Remember, the power to overcome is already yours. What you have received in Christ is sufficient to overcome every storm, every obstacle, and every opposition. You have authority over situations, over challenges, and over the works of the enemy—if only you dare to use it.

So, step out today. Recognize your authority. Speak boldly. Act in faith. Trust God to back you up. And as you do, you will experience protection, provision, and breakthrough—just as our humble mud house stood firm while all around it was being torn apart.

When you know how to use your authority, you won’t wait for God to do what you are already empowered to do for yourself.
