Life does not move randomly. It responds to direction, whether we are conscious of it or not. And direction itself is determined by focus. Many people pray for change, desire growth, and expect better outcomes, yet they rarely pause to examine what occupies their attention daily. What dominates your thoughts will eventually dominate your life, because attention is never neutral, which is why it becomes important to understand how to renew your mind.
You may not be able to control everything that happens around you, but you absolutely control what you magnify. That responsibility is powerful, even though many people ignore it. Whatever you give your attention to consistently will grow in influence over your life. Whether positive or negative, focus acts like fuel, and it strengthens whatever it is applied to.
The power of focus cannot be overstated. How a person’s life turns out is ultimately determined by what they focus on over time. Your focus determines your direction, and your direction determines your destination. This is not just a motivational idea—it is a practical reality that plays out daily in the lives of individuals.
Think about a car. There are two visual references available to a driver—the rearview mirror and the front windshield. Both are necessary, but they are not meant to be used equally. The rearview mirror is for occasional reference, while the windshield is for continuous focus. If a driver keeps staring at the rearview mirror, he will eventually crash. But if he fixes his eyes on the road ahead, he will move forward safely. Life operates in the same way, which is why it becomes essential to learn how to guard your thoughts.
This principle becomes even clearer when we look at Scripture. Genesis 2:9 tells us that God made all kinds of trees grow in the garden, trees that were pleasant to the eyes and good for food. In the middle of the garden stood two specific trees: the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. These two trees represented two different directions and two different outcomes.
I have often wondered why Adam and Eve did not eat from the Tree of Life first. The answer lies in strategy. The devil understood something very important: if he could draw Eve’s attention to the one tree that would create separation between man and God, access to the Tree of Life would be lost. So he did not begin a conversation about life—he began a conversation about the forbidden tree.
He redirected focus, and once focus shifted, destiny shifted. Man began to concentrate on the wrong tree, and the result was death. That same strategy is still in operation today. The enemy does not necessarily need to remove what is good from your life. He only needs to redirect your attention away from it.
In every season of your life, you are presented with the equivalent of these two trees. The Tree of Life represents growth, opportunity, discipline, faith, gratitude, and progress. The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil represents distraction, negativity, offense, comparison, fear, and destructive habits. Both are present, and both are accessible, which is why the daily choice becomes critical—kill evil thoughts before they kill you.
You have the liberty to choose, but you must understand something clearly. Whichever one you focus on will determine the direction of your life. It is not enough to know what is right—you must give your attention to it consistently. Focus is what turns potential into reality.
This principle applies to very practical areas of life. Take the internet, for example. It contains life-changing knowledge, opportunities, and resources that can elevate you. At the same time, it also contains destructive content, immoral material, toxic conversations, and endless distractions. Whether you grow or stagnate depends on what you choose to focus on.
The same is true for social media. It can inspire you, educate you, and connect you with people who can influence your destiny positively. But it can also drain your time, distort your values, and fill your mind with negativity. The platform itself is neutral. Your focus is what determines whether it becomes a tool for growth or a source of decline.
Consider your relationships as well. Every person you interact with has both strengths and weaknesses. If you choose to focus only on flaws, you will gradually destroy that relationship in your heart. But if you nurture what is good and build on it, the relationship can grow into something meaningful. Again, focus determines outcome.
Even in the church, this principle holds true. There are imperfections everywhere because people are involved. If you fix your eyes only on what is wrong, you will struggle to grow spiritually. But if you focus on God, on service, and on your personal growth, you will flourish regardless of imperfections around you, which is part of walking in a sound mind.
In business and career, challenges are inevitable. There will always be competition, delays, risks, and uncertainties. If you magnify the obstacles, fear will begin to control your decisions. But if you focus on opportunities, solutions, and growth, courage will rise within you. Once again, focus determines direction.
Life will always present you with two trees. You cannot remove one of them, and you cannot pretend one does not exist. But you can decide which one deserves your attention. That decision, repeated daily, will shape your life over time.
What you consistently focus on will magnify. What you magnify will influence your decisions. And your decisions will ultimately shape your destiny. This is why guarding your attention is not optional—it is necessary.
Be intentional about what you watch, what you dwell on, what you discuss, and what you replay in your mind. If you focus on negativity, it will grow. If you focus on fear, it will begin to control you. If you focus on opportunity, it will expand in your life. And if you focus on God, your faith will grow stronger.
Choose wisely. Because whether you realize it or not, your future is quietly being built by whatever holds your focus today.
