Kill It Before It Kills You: The Power of Thoughts in Christian Living

Someone may be wondering, “What does he mean by ‘kill it before it kills you’?”

Let me explain.

I want to share something many of us already know but often neglect. This is one of the subtle ways the devil defeats many Christians without them realizing it. It shows the importance of renewing your mind, aligning your thoughts with God’s truth so that you are not easily swayed by deception or negative patterns.

The devil is not all-powerful. In fact, even unbelievers have some measure of power over him—if they understand this principle and deal with the seed early, before it takes root.

Let me start with a personal story.

One day, I behaved very strangely toward someone who had done absolutely nothing wrong to me. Later, when I became calm, I began to examine myself to understand what led to that behavior.

What I discovered was eye-opening.

The devil had carried out what I call “soft programming” on my mind—quietly and gradually, without my awareness.

I realized that a long time earlier, the devil had planted a seed of negative thoughts in my heart against that person. I noticed it, but I did nothing about it. I did not uproot it. Over time, that unchecked thought shaped my attitude, and eventually my behavior, reminding me to guard your thoughts carefully, because what you allow to take root will influence who you become.

God made me understand that if I had dealt with those thoughts immediately, that situation would never have happened.

The Scripture confirms this truth:

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

—Proverbs 23:7

The devil understands that thoughts control behavior. He knows that once he can influence your thinking with negativity, it is only a matter of time before negative actions follow.

So what does he do?

He looks for every opportunity to plant negative thoughts in your heart.

Sometimes something happens, and you are not offended at first. But later, offense comes—not from the event itself, but from the interpretation the devil introduces.

He begins to replay the event in your mind, highlighting every possible negative angle, until you start dwelling on it.

At that point, you have a choice.

If you kill the thought immediately and take your heart away from it, you have won.

Your will is so powerful, learn more about the power of human will here.

But if you entertain it, your behavior toward that person will eventually change.

Please understand this clearly: no devil has power over your thoughts.

He can suggest and influence, but you decide what stays.

This power is not exclusive to Christians—but it is strengthened in believers through the help of the Holy Spirit.

So we all have authority over what we choose to think.

When negative thoughts are introduced, do not allow them to gain ground. Reject them immediately. Decide not to meditate on anything that contradicts love, truth, and God’s Word. By doing this, you tap into the power of a sound mind, which enables you to think clearly, act wisely, and resist the enemy’s schemes. If you do only this, you have already won half the battle.

However, the mind is always active—it cannot stay empty. So once you reject a negative thought, you must replace it with a positive one.

This is why God gave us His Word.

When we discipline ourselves to think in line with God’s Word, victory becomes consistent, not occasional.

In Summary

Learn to kill negative thoughts at the seed stage—before they take root, shape your character, and destroy relationships.

Uproot them quickly, and intentionally align your thinking with the Word of God.

That is how you stay victorious.
