Let’s Be Accountable in Nigeria: Why Accountability Builds Trust and Blessings.

We have a serious problem with accountability in Nigeria. When you demand accountability, people see you as a bad person—too strict, too stingy, or unnecessarily difficult.

You send someone to buy something, they return with the item and quietly keep the balance. Many times, they assume you should leave it for them as payment for simply obeying your instruction, highlighting the importance of living in integrity and maintaining honesty and transparency in every action.

People change prices on things that concern many people without prior notice or explanation. No transparency, no accountability.

You lend someone money, and they fail to return it as agreed. When you ask, they respond with statements like, “Is it because of this small money you are disturbing me?” Very sad.

I once gave someone products to sell for me. After selling them, he told me that as long as the money was still with him, it was not mine. When I asked him to hand over the money, he refused. I had to apply a little force to collect what rightfully belonged to me, emphasizing the importance of taking responsibility for your actions and ensuring accountability in every transaction.

On another occasion, I traveled and paid ₦30,500, but the receipt I was given showed ₦30,100. When I questioned it, explanations started coming. What stopped them from stating the full amount clearly on the receipt and explaining it properly from the beginning, I cannot tell. For all I know, the explanation may have been cooked up on the spot.

Many times, when I demand accountability, I am tagged selfish or stingy. But the truth is this: life will be better and more blessed if we all learn to be accountable, and if we also treat everyone right, showing fairness, respect, and integrity in all our interactions.

Accountability builds trust. It makes people confident in us and willing to work with us again.

Let’s learn to be accountable.
