You Must Be Born Again: What It Truly Means According to Jesus

Let me ask you a very honest question. Are you truly born again, or have you simply been going to church for many years? This may sound like a simple question, but it is one of the most important questions anyone can ever ask themselves. It is a question that goes beyond routine and tradition, and it demands a sincere and personal answer, revealing the truth about being born again and what it truly means to have a transformed life in Christ.

Many people attend church regularly. They sing in the choir, give offerings, and call themselves Christians. Yet when you ask them if they are truly born again, the answer becomes unclear. Some hesitate, others are unsure, and a few openly admit they do not know. This shows that being around church activities is not the same as experiencing true spiritual transformation.

Jesus did not say that people must simply go to church to see the Kingdom of God. He said something much deeper—something that goes to the root of a person’s existence. He made it clear that a man must be born again. This is not a suggestion or a religious idea; it is a divine requirement for anyone who desires to see God’s Kingdom.

But what does it really mean to be born again? Is it just a phrase people repeat in church, or is it a real spiritual experience? Many people use the term casually without understanding its depth. Yet, it is not a slogan—it is a life-changing encounter that transforms a person from within. To understand it properly, we must look closely at the words of Jesus.

John 3:3 (NIV)

“Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

These are the words of Jesus Himself, and they must be taken seriously. Today, there are many people in church who are not born again, even though they assume they are. Some do not even know whether they are born again or not. This confusion is dangerous because eternity depends on this truth, making it vital to understand what you received when you got born again and the life-transforming blessings that come with it.

Many people are comfortable calling themselves Christians, yet they admit they are not born again. Others boldly claim they are born again but still hold tightly to their old ways of life. When I hear statements like, “We are human; we cannot live above sin,” it reveals a lack of understanding. Such a statement shows that the person does not truly grasp what the new birth means.

If you are born again and nothing changes in your life, then something is wrong. The new birth is not an empty confession—it produces visible transformation. If a person is still comfortable living in sin—lying, deceiving, engaging in fornication or adultery, and practicing unrighteousness—then that person has not truly experienced the new birth. The evidence of a new life must be seen in how you live.

Read a bit of my story in this article.

So, what does it mean to be born again? It means that a new life has been born in you. The life of God is imparted into your spirit at the moment of salvation. It is not symbolic—it is real. Something divine takes place within you that changes your nature completely.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

The life of God that was lost in Adam—when man could no longer communicate with God—has now been restored. This is a real birth in your spirit, just as a child is physically born into the world. And just like a newborn child needs nourishment to grow, this new life also needs to be fed. Without growth, it cannot mature or function as it should.

This is why the Bible says:

1 Peter 2:2 (KJV)

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”

If this new life is neglected, it will remain weak and undeveloped. This explains why many believers remain spiritual babies for years. Growth does not happen automatically; it requires intentional feeding on the Word of God. As you grow, your understanding deepens and your life begins to reflect the nature of God more clearly.

Don't ever live in fear of not making it to heaven.

Now, consider this: why would God give us a new spirit when we are born again? The answer is simple but profound. God cannot dwell in a corrupt nature. Our old nature is sinful and cannot contain His presence. If God were to dwell in that old nature, it would be destroyed. But God, in His wisdom and mercy, chose another way.

Matthew 9:17 (KJV)

“Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break… but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.”

God recreated our spirit so that it could become a suitable dwelling place for Him. He prepared a new vessel before pouring His Spirit into us. This is why the new birth is necessary. It is God’s way of making us fit to carry His presence. Thank God, His Spirit now lives in us.

Secondly, the new birth was necessary to solve the problem of sin. The old nature is incapable of pleasing God, no matter how hard it tries. It is bound by sin and cannot break free on its own. That is why mere forgiveness would not have been enough if the nature remained unchanged.

Romans 8:8 (KJV)

“So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”

If God had forgiven us but left us with the old nature, we would still be slaves to sin. The struggle would continue, and true freedom would never be experienced. But God went beyond forgiveness—He gave us a new nature. This new nature is superior to sin and has the power to live above it.

So when a man is truly born again, that new life within him begins to grow as he feeds on the Word of God. The things that once controlled him begin to lose their hold. Sin no longer has dominion over him. He begins to walk in victory, breaking free from addictions and destructive patterns.

He becomes the dwelling place of God and starts to live a life that reflects divine nature. This is the reality of the new birth—not theory, but experience. It is a life of transformation, growth, and victory. Glory to God.
